Yes, this goes in the future “autobiography”!

Every time you make a Powerpoint, Edward Tufte kills a kitten.

Thing is that legendary Edward Tufte doesn’t like Powerpoint a bit (here is his critique). Presently reading ebook of “The Visual Display of Quantitative Information”, but trying to locate a hard copy in Pakistan.

Just went through an Asian Development Bank report on Rapid Transport System for Lahore and came to know some very disturbing facts.

  1. There are over 300 katchi abadis (slums or basic unplanned brick-mortar housing areas) which hold 50% of all Urban Lahore population.
  2. 35-50% of people in Lahore are classified as poor.
  3. Majority of those Katchi Abadi dwellers are below poverty line.

That is some serious irregular distribution of wealth!

To compare Lahore in GDP with a city you might be living in, you can check these stats here and for area wise stats click here.

Only thing I hate about Pakistan is how much I have to control an anger out burst. I can easily become a serial killer if these random ignorant and inconsiderate people don’t stop testing my patience.

TedTalks: Moral psychology and the its matrix.

(via zushan)

From video: Psychologist Jonathan Haidt studies the five moral values that form the basis of our political choices, whether we’re left, right or center. In this eye-opening talk, he pinpoints the moral values that liberals and conservatives tend to honor most.

My add: This is what I am going to refer anyone who asks me again, what I really believe in or why I am (kind of) a Centrist?

COLD - TRAILER

From video: For the past 26 years 16 expeditions have tried and failed to climb one of Pakistan’s 8,000 meter peaks in winter. On february 2, 2011, Simone Moro, Denis Urubko and cory richards became the first. cory is now the only American to summit any 8,000 meter peak in winter. The journey nearly killed them. Cory carried a small camera and filmed the ordeal constantly. This is their story, as seen from the raw, honest perspective of Cory’s lens.

In festivals 2011.

This makes me look at my ever growing belly - damn this desk job!

Thumbprint of God?

Watched Prof Jim Al-Khalili’s program “Secret Life of Chaos” last night on BBC4 and it was really impressive how he discussed the basics of Chaos theory. This here is a clip where he explains Mandelbrot Set (Fractal) also called by some, thumbprint of God.

For another clip of Mandelbrot Set with Mandelbrot Song click on the link, or to read more about it click here, or why not make yourself one?

To watch the actual documentary in UK, you can catch it on BBC iPlayer here however for US I believe you can watch it at Veoh here.

Syria. The other side (by Ruslan Fedotow)

From video: Following the recent events that took place in Syria, people all over the world used to see this country like it presented by media. I have been twice there and can assure you Syria is a wonderful land with its age-old traditions and unique culture. First, I came to Syria together with my friends in August 2010. That’s exactly when I shot my first video about the place. Later Blake Whitman showed it on vimeo.com HD channel. The movie was warmly met and watched by a great number of people, what gave me an opportunity to take part in another project in Syria in February this year. It was a documentary about the country made in 20 days. I was DOP in a second unit. The video you see I made together with my friend from my Syrian shot here, at home. I wish people remembered Syria a great and marvelous country like it really is! Thank you!

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The similitude of His light is as a niche wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass. The glass is as it were a shining star. (This lamp is) kindled from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the East nor of the West, whose oil would almost glow forth (of itself) though no fire touched it. Light upon light, Allah guideth unto His light whom He will. And Allah speaketh to mankind in allegories, for Allah is knower of all things.

Surah Nur/Light (24:35). My personal favourite Ayah from Quran.

Radiolab Presents Symmetry

This striking Radiolab video made by Everynone was inspired by Radiolab’s Desperately Seeking Symmetry episode. Filmmakers Will Hoffman, Daniel Mercadante, and Julius Metoyer III play with our yearning for balance, and reveal how beautiful imperfect matches can be. More info here: RadioLab, Everynone.
