Gérard Manset - Revivre (film: Holy Motors / 2012)

Everything is more complicated than you think. You only see a tenth of what is true. There are a million little strings attached to every choice you make; you can destroy your life every time you choose. But maybe you won’t know for twenty years. And you may never ever trace it to its source. And you only get one chance to play it out. Just try and figure out your own divorce. And they say there is no fate, but there is: it’s what you create. And even though the world goes on for eons and eons, you are only here for a fraction of a fraction of a second. Most of your time is spent being dead or not yet born. But while alive, you wait in vain, wasting years, for a phone call or a letter or a look from someone or something to make it all right. And it never comes or it seems to but it doesn’t really. And so you spend your time in vague regret or vaguer hope that something good will come along. Something to make you feel connected, something to make you feel whole, something to make you feel loved. And the truth is I feel so angry, and the truth is I feel so fucking sad, and the truth is I’ve felt so fucking hurt for so fucking long and for just as long I’ve been pretending I’m OK, just to get along, just for, I don’t know why, maybe because no one wants to hear about my misery, because they have their own. Well, fuck everybody. Amen.

Minister in Synecdoche, New York (2008)

Hans: My wife is sitting on a chair someplace. Some gray place. I thought she’d be in Heaven, but she’s sitting on a chair with a bullet in her head. I thought they’d have cleaned that kind of stuff up.
Marty: Maybe you’ve just eaten too many hallucinogenic cactuses tonight, Hans.
Hans: Nothing to do with the hallucinogens.
Marty: But you’ve just seen Myra on a chair with a bullet through her head.
Hans: In some gray place.
Marty: England?
Hans: It seemed a lot worse than that.
Marty: Wow.

Seven Psychopaths (2012)

Tuesday Movie Recommendation: Eva (2011, Spanish)

A beautiful film by Catalan director Kike Maíllo (also his debut) which explores the man vs machine relation in a very beautiful manner. How will you deal with the entity which is supposed to be Human but is not? How do you let go of your own creation and how different will that be from letting go of your own child? And the idea of a Robot afterlife…

For all the things which could have been done better with the film, it is still worth every second of your time. And I have never thought that David Bowie’s Major Tom will sit so well in such a scene. (imdb / trailer)

A half-finished book is, after all, a half finished love affair.

Robert Frobisher (Cloud Atlas)

Hobit 3d

Just came back after watching the new Peter Jackson film. And this is what I feel about it:

  1. I wish it wasn’t in 3d.
  2. I still hate the people who talk in cinema during the film, they need to be kicked in the nuts and offered no sympathy afterwards.
  3. Apart from the higher frame rate at shoot and using the beautiful RED Epics cameras for shooting the film, I still think that the shots were too tight and gave almost a claustrophobic feel every now and then. At least during the action sequences the whole things look like a giant mess.
  4. Hobbits are cool. Whereas Dwarfs sometime sound a little Irish and at others a little Scottish - please make up your mind!
  5. I AM MOVING TO NEW ZEALAND!

Not a usual Tuesday Movie Recommendation: They Came Back (Les revenants)

Just 15 minutes in this movie had already started to make me uncomfortable on some level. Idea of having your loved ones back from the dead, and all they want is to settle down back in their lives. Some of them just want to make mends while the living want to make sense of the things. Will you even want your dead child back?

You have to probably watch it to understand how powerful some of the imagery, execution and this whole idea is. (imdb / trailer)

*will do my best to do the usual Tuesday recommendations only.

The Iceman - Official Trailer (HD)

I think once in a while you need a movie like this.

Pivot

When a man is witness to a murder and takes pictures of the killer, he has to run for his life. During the chase he is able to turn the tables and the prey becomes the hunter. All resulting in an unfortunate ending.

The film is designed and animated by:
Kevin Megens, Floris Vos, Arno de Grijs, André Bergs
Music and sound design by Alex Debicki.
Script by Jan Eduards.
Produced by il Luster Productions.
2009

Tuesday Movie Recommendation: Little Children (2006, Rated R)

Why didn’t I see this film before? Took me honestly two days to watch this film, but it was worth 137 minutes of my time. The movie makes me wonder if it is about finding your little children or is it about adults being little children themselves. Do tell me what do you think about it.

The NFL narrative style is also pretty interesting, though I am being told that some people hated that. Topics of a Registered Sex Offender and married couples cheating on each other are also touched in a pretty raw manner. A definitely recommended film. (trailer / imdb)

Cloud Atlas trailer (2012)

Looking forward to this.

Batman: dark knight rises with brothers and Danial. (mobile)

The Turk who saved the world (and other stories)

From the 1960s to 1980s Turkish popular cinema - dubbed Yesilcam (Green Pine) - produced a large number of films that borrowed storylines and ideas from American blockbusters and pop culture. Some even lifted entire sequences and scores from Hollywood.

Many had a superhero or fantastic theme but the range is vast, from James Bond adaptation Altin Cocuk (Golden Boy), to a Turkish exorcist called Seytan (Satan). (complete article)

So this is the cinema which establishes how much friendly relation Turkey and Pakistan got!
