That father and his two sons, and that little girl below them…these are the four Jewish victims of the shooting in Toulouse, France on Monday. Rabbi Yonatan Sandler was a columnist in a local Jewish newspaper and a teacher at Ozar HaTorah, a Jewish elementary school in Toulouse, and his two sons, Gabriel (3) and Aryeh (6), as well as Miriam Monsonego (8), were students there.

When Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu visited Rabbi Sandler’s widow as she sat Shiv’a for her husband and two children, he said afterwards the following.

“I saw the depth of the grief and pain of a young mother who is feeding a baby, who lost her husband and two of her little children, the agony of a life cut short and hope which was crushed, and I think to myself: what cruelty, what barbarity can cause a man to do an act which is so inhumane. For these murderers, wherever a Jew walks, every centimeter of land he walks on, is occupied territory. From their perspective, Jews have no place in the world. They want to murder Jews wherever they are, and for that reason the state of Israel was established.”

And people say that antisemitism isn’t prevalent today.

I mean, I’m not a whole-hearted supporter of Israel. They’ve done some horrible things too of course, but the issue isn’t all black and white and this incident is incredibly sad.
